Three dimensional seepage analysis for the foundation rock of Roudbar dam, Iran, taking to account hydromechanical couplings in fractures

Water seepage through foundation rock of Roudbar dam has been investigated using three dimensional distinct element method code (3DEC).Numerical analysis was done in two overall stages. In first stage only mechanical analysis was performed in order to generate deformation state of the foundation rock due to darn body and abutments loads. In the second stage, the reservoir impounding was simulated in five stages corresponding to various water levels in the reservoir. Results show that due to dam construction (prior to the reservoir impounding), the permeability of the foundation rock decreases so that the fractures apertures decreases by a factor of about 2-4 in upstream region and reaches the residual value in region below the dam body. Results also show that the flow rates in the foundation rock is significantly controlled with the permeability change, i.e. aperture distribution, prior to the reservoir filling. Finally the flow rates obtained from hydromechanical analysis was compared with that obtained from hydraulic analysis in order to investigate the contribution of hydromechanical couplings in fractures during impounding to the seepage regime. Results show that flow rates from hydromechanical analysis are significantly higher than that from hydraulical analysis.
