Changes in geoenvironment upon the high-rise construction in Moscow

At present, the construction of high-rise buildings is intensely going on in Moscow, upon which the subsurface is being used to a substantial depth. The geological conditions vary considerably in Moscow, with karstified and fractured terrigenous carbonate deposits of the Carboniferous age occuring at a depth ranging from 5-10 to 100 m and three generations of river valleys of different age being known. The geological structure undergoes considerable changes upon the construction of buildings with deep foundations. The detailed survey of engineering geological conditions was performed at the construction site of a complex of Moscow government office buildings located at the territory of the Moscow City international business centre. The geoenvironmental changes have been analyzed at the construction site and the hazard of karst and suffosion development after the end of construction has been assessed for this site and for the ad- jacent area.
