Mechanical shear behavior of over-consolidated silty clay under static and dynamic loading

In this paper, by employing a sophisticated ring shear apparatus, a series of ring shear tests were conducted to study the shear behavior of overconsolidated silty clay under static and dynamic loading. The effects of stress history, shear rate and cyclic loading on the shear resistance of over-consolidated silty clay were examined and discussed. It is found that the preconsolidation pressures and shear rates exert remarkable influence on the peak shear strengths and the following post-peak reduction in strength. The soils with high shear rate are prone to the strain softening. The effects of cyclic loading on residual strengths are noticeable. The variation of residual strengths before and after cyclic loading seems correlated with the stress history and the shear rate.
