Resistance to seepage water and microscopic structure of sandy soils

A collapse of a tunnel face caused by seepage water often occurs in sandy ground. In previous studies, a resistance to seepage water of sandy ground was studied in view only of soil mechanics but not of geology. To understand the resistance to seepage water of sandy ground from the viewpoint of geology, therefore we examined soil physical properties and observed microscopic structure of undisturbed samples. These results suggested that the resistance to seepage water of sandy ground had anisotropy against the bedding plane, and the resistance was related to cohesion that depended on the content of clay including cements.
