Modeling and Ezperimental Measurement of Surface Distortion in Sheet Metal Stamping

Surface distortion is a subtle waviness in the sheet deformation which is not desired by design. It is deemed as surface defect and not acceptable for the show surfaces of sheets. The distortion often occurs next to a depression feature such as ones in sun roof, body side outer and deck lid outer. In this study,a circular panel with squareshape depression in the center was investigated experimentally and numerically. The distortion amount in the panels was measured using coordinate measurement machine and the surface profile was obtained using a white-light scanner. Meanwhile, the drawing of the circular panel was modeled using LSDYNA solver. The sheet deformation from the numerical simulation was compared to the scanned data. Conclusions were made on the sensitivity of the distortion magnitude to the variation of geometric variables used in representing the square-shape depression feature.
