A Review of Laser Welding Technology for Mass Production of Tailored Blanks

Laser welded blanks have seen a remarkable evolution from rather infrequent applications at the end of the 1980 s to a key product in today s and future automotive body design. The design of laser-welded blanks has evolved from very simple to rather complex layouts in order to comply with the continuously increasing challenges of weight reduction, engineering properties and cost. Over the period of time, different laser welding production concepts have developed allowing to make a superior product in terms of cost, quality and flexibility in a highly competitive market environment. The review starts from working out the major requirements for laser welding equipment and indicates the core components of a production line. Then material flow and handling technology is discussed to identify specific characteristics in view of productivity and flexibility. Cycle time, manufacturing constraints and, thus, cost effects will be analyzed on the example of typical blank designs demanded by the automotive industry. Finally procedures of weld quality control are demonstrated.
