Grain Size Control by Niobium Microalloying in Gear Steel during High Temperature Carburizing
Increased efficiency of the process of gear steel carburizing by increasing the carburizing temperature in order to reduce the treatment time is a well-known effect. However, grain coarsening and formation of mixed grain sizes during the high temperature carburizing process deteriorate the final mechanical properties such as fatigue strength and also lead to excessive distortion of the part. Niobium microalloying in combination with other alloying elements helps to prevent grain coarsening during high temperature carburizing and optimizes the mechanical properties. The fundamentals of the Nb effect in medium carbon steels are being explained. Several alloying concepts for application in passenger cars and also in heavier vehicles are demonstrated. Also indicated is the potential of economic achievements by the high temperature carburizing process.
