Crystals and Liquid Crystals of Functional Dyes: π-Stacking Structures and Properties
In recent years, the term “functional dye has been used widely to emphasize these new functionalities of π-conjugated chromophores in novel technological area, such as organic thin film transistors, solar cells, and biosensors. One of the most useful functional dye unit is given by perylene tetracarboxylic acid bisimide (PBI). In our studies, a series of crystalline and liquid crystalline PBI dyes with different substituents in the bay and imide positions of the perylene core have been synthesized. Their crystal and liquid crystalline phases were observed and characterized by DSC, X-ray diffraction and polarizing microscopy. The p-p stacking of the dye molecules in crystals and liquid crystals were studied in detail. The electrochemical, optical, and charge transport properties arise from the interaction of the assembled dye molecules were studied. The results indicate that these dyes might serve as useful functional materials for organic electronics.
