Crystal Growth and Polymorphic Transformation -A Case Study: Carbamazepine Crystallization

Polymorphism, in which multiple crystal forms exist for the same chemical compound, is of significant interest to the pharmaceutical industry. It has been found for nearly 200 years. The variation in physical properties, such as crystal shape, solubility, hardness, color, melting point, and chemical reactivity makes polymorphism an important issue for the food, specialty chemical and pharmaceutical industries, where products are specified not by only chemical composition, but also by their performance. Control over desired performance properties requires therefore control over the formation of the desired polymorphic structure. Many parameters influence the formation of polymorphs: temperature, pressure, supersaturation, solvent, seeding and additives.
