Seeding effect in Pretreatment Stage for Seawater Crystallization

The need for drinking water is rapidly increasing and current freshwater resources will not be able to meet all requirements in the future. Seawater is the main resource to prepare freshwater in Middle East and North African (MENA) countries. One of the most important obstacle facing the design and operation of thermal desalination units is the scaling problem, especially, the precipitation of calcium carbonate on the surfaces of hot tubes. The addition of inhibitors or the cleaning with acids are effective ways to prevent the CaCO3 crystal growth, but they will have negative environmental impacts from one side and increase the cost of desalination on the other side. This study investigates a smart method to precipitate the scaling materials in seawater on selected seeds as a pretreatment process to reduce the main scaling compound (CaCO3) before the seawater enters the evaporation stage. The crystallization of CaCO3 from artificial seawater was investigated. The experiments are conducted in a batch vessel containing artificial seawater.
