Silver Nanocrystals Oriented by DNA Templates

The ability to control the geometries (e.g., shape, size, interdistance, and arrangement) of noble metals nanomaterials, especially silver, has increasingly attracted the attention of scientists in the fields of catalysis, electronics, photonics, information storage, optoelectronics, biological labeling, etc. In recent years, a number of Ag nanowires have been widely synthesized by using DNA as the template because of its self-assembly and mechanical properties, as well as the high affinity between DNA bases with Ag+ cations. For instance, Jeffry1 produced Ag nanoclusters encapsulated by short oligonucleotides. Shemer2 reported silver nanoparticles grown on a chiral template including 700 base pairs double stranded scaffold. Berti3 modulated the size of CdS nanoparticles by templating their formation with oligo(guanine)n oligomers where n varied from 5 to 20. Ihara4 found silver ion unusually stabilizes the structure of a parallel-motif DNA triplex using Hoogsteen base-pairing.
