Influence of Thickness of Armor on the Burst-Effect of Steel Shell PELE
It is very important that researching the rule between the burst-effect of PELE and impact velocity and target thickness, especially for deeply searching the mechanism of PELE and enhancing its damage efficiency. In this experiment, 35GrMnSiA and nylon were respectively adopted as the shell and the core of PELE for the first time, the projectiles vertically impacted armor plates range from 5mm to 25mm with a velocity about 800m/s. Experiment results indicate that this kind of PELE can penetrate these armor plates and achieve cracking, With the increase of thickness of target, the number of perforation and the splashing angle of fragment enlarge firstly and then decrease, and the axial velocity gradually reduces. As armor thickness is 15mm, the burst-effect looks greatest, which the perforation number can reach 72 and the splashing angle can reach 39 °. The thickness of armor is less, the burning effect of Nylon core is better. All of the conclusions may redound to the design and application of PELE.
