A Comparison of Forage Yield and Quality among Corn, Sweet Sorghum, Sudan Grass and Pearl Millet in Nanjing
1. Introduction With the rapid development of animal husbandry, silage is in great demand in agricultural region of eastern China. Silage is mainly produced from stover and/or whole plant of corn, but the climate and soil condition is not suitable for growing corn in eastern China. In addition, spring corn in that area often suffers from rough dwarf disease. In order to find suitable forage crops with high yield and good quality that can replace corn as the silage resources in eastern China, forage yield and quality of com, sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench), Sudan grass (Sorghum sudanense L.), hybrid Sudan grass (Sorghum. bicolor×Sorghum. Sudanese) and pearl millet (Pnnisetum amerieanum L.) were compared in field trials.
