Studies on Lignite Biodegradation by Rhodopseudomonas Spheroides

The effects of lignite granularity, Rhodopseudomonas spheroids (R.s) dosage, lignite water slurry density and degradation time on lignite biodegradation effi ci ency have been investigated. The order of importance of these factors are determined as lignite granularity>slurry density> degradation time>RS dosage. The optimum lay-out of the experimental scheme within the designated interval can be stated as follows: the lignite granularity: 0.5–0.2 mm; the dosage of R.s: 5 mL/100 mL; slurry density: 0.3 g/50 mL; degradation time: 14 d. Under these conditions, the biodegradation percentage of Yi-Ma lignite which was pretreated by nitric acid was 74.30%. The degradation products were analyzed by using XRD and FTIR, which indicate that the polymerization of the aromatic nucleus and the molecular weights of products tend to drop remarkably with the obvious change of the content of the functional groups as compared with the original lignite. This study suggests a possibly high biodegradation of lignite.
