Effect of Road Networks on Regional Landscape

Road network expansion combined with the potential changes in landscape present challenges for landscape ecologists and conservation biologists throughout the world. But the effect of road networks on the relationship between different elements has not yet been well studied at regional scale with quantified methods. In the paper, the new invented index which is different from other traditional landscape pattern indices was used to evaluate obstructing function of the road networks on landscape in the study area, downstream of Lancang River, Yunnan Province, China. The results showed that the average probability of any two resource patches decreased by 24.2%, and the connection of landscape elements in total decreased by 15.30% with the road network overlay compared with the landscape without road networks. To draw the conclusion, road networks had negative effect on the relationships between landscape elements as a typical block and changed the importance of certain patches in accommodating the ecological processes in general by increasing the effect ive distance and then reducing the maximum movement probability between each two patches. In addition, the degree of obstructing function increased with the probability of the occurrence of certain ecological process decreased and the movement abilities of different ecological processes increased.
