Fishes in Manwan, before and after Manwan Dam Construction on Mekong Mainstream
To satisfy the need of increasing population and energy consumption, China has planned 14 cascade dams in the Upper Mekong mainstream. Manwan dam was completed first and formed a 70 km-long reservoir. Before the closure of Manwan dam, there were 49 species in this area, and increased to 64 species belonging to 6 orders, 15 families and 44 genera now. Cyprinidae dominated the fish assemblage as 55.10% of the total fishes in Manwan area before Manwan dam construction, followed by Sisoridae and Cobitidae as 18.37% and 14.29% respectively. After dam construction, Cyprinidae still dominated the whole assemblage, but decreased to 42.19%. Sisoridae and Cobitidae both occupied the same as 14.06%. Among the 52 endemic species, Cyprinidae ranked the first as 40.38%, then Sisoridae and Cobitidae both as 17.31%. All the species in Homalopteridae were endemic, and occupied 11.54% of the total. Three teams were grouped according to the habitat as flowing water species, rapid current species and lenitic species, while based on feeding habit, there were four teams as carnivorous, zooplanktivores, herbivorous and omnivorous. Fish fauna here has changed with the domination of exotic species, species suited to slow and eutropication water, and loss of many demersal species.
