Study on Tozic Effect of p-Chloroaniline on a Strain of Purple Non-sulfur Photosynthetic Bacteria

A strain of purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB) named CS2 was isolated from the sediment near the sewage outfall in Benxi Steel Coking plant, which can high effectively degrade p-Chloroaniline (PCA). The effect of concentration of PCA on cell growth and dehydrogenase activity of CS2 strain was studied. The experiments showed that when the PCA concentration was about 80 mg.L-1, the growth of CS2 strain was inhabited. Moreover, when its concentration reached 640 mg.L-1, its growth would completely be inhabited. The result on a standard method of aquatic bioassay for evaluating the toxicity of toxic chemicals applied in the experiments showed that the lowest observed effect of their concentration (LOEC) on the CS2 strain growth was 60 mg.L-1. On the contrary, the half-inhibitory concentration (IC50) of PCA on the inhibition of CS2 strain growth was 162.5 mg.L-1, which was higher than many kinds of bacteria reported previously.
