Nutrient Limiting Biofouling Formation in Recirculating Cooling Water System

Understanding the contribution of nutrient levels to biofouling control is important requirement for management strategies in the recirculating cooling water system. Nutrient limitation may be one way to control biofouling development without increasing biocides dosing. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the effects of nutrient levels on biofouling control in the recirculating cooling water system. The biofouling characteristics were assessed by means of carbohydrate and protein contents in extracellular polymeric substances, variation of biofouling mass and bacteria respiratory activity. The results indicate that the concentrations of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the cooling water have the significant effects on biofouling control and controlling nutrient levels can lengthen the biofouling initial growth period. According to the results obtained in nutrient factor experiments, the biofouling can be better controlled at the glucose, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of 30 mg·L-1, 6-8 mg N·L-1 and 1.0 mg P·L-1, respectively. In practice, controlling nutrient levels may be a potential candidate for reducing biofouling formation and development in the recirculating cooling water system.
