Competitive Adsorption of Chromate and Arsenite with Arsenate on Hydrous Ferric Ozide

Competitive adsorption of Cr(Ⅳ) and As(Ⅲ) with As(Ⅴ) on hydrous ferric oxide (HFO), respectively, associated with single adsorption and effects of ion strength, were studied. Results showed that, for single system, adsorption amount of As(Ⅴ) was higher than that of Cr(Ⅵ) but lower than that of As(Ⅲ) under the same conditions. Effect experiments of ion strength indicated that adsorption of three oxyanions all existed inner-sphere complexation. In the co-presence of Cr(Ⅵ) and As(Ⅴ), the adsorption of As(Ⅴ) was slightly inhibited by Cr(Ⅵ), while that of Cr(Ⅵ) was intensively suppressed by As(Ⅴ) indicating the stronger complexation capacity of As(Ⅴ) with HFO surface than Cr(Ⅵ). With the increase of ion strength, adsorption amount of As(Ⅴ) increased, while that of Cr(Ⅵ) tended to decrease possibly resulting from enhancement of As(Ⅴ) inhibition to Cr(Ⅵ) adsorption. In the co-presence of As(Ⅲ) and As(Ⅴ), adsorption of As(Ⅲ) was significantly inhibited by As(V), vice versa. Adsorption amount of As(Ⅲ) hardly varied with ion strength, while that of As(V) decreased at lower ion strength, indicating that lower ion strength would reduce the removal efficiency of total arsenic by HFO in the co-presence of As(Ⅲ) and As(Ⅴ).
