Suitability and Assessment of Groundwater Quality Due to Anthropogenic Sources: A Case Study of Puri City, India

Puri city is situated on the east coast shoreline of India in the Bay of Bengal and groundwater is the only source available to meet the potable water supply of the city. The objective of the present paper is to assess the impact of anthropogenic activities on the groundwater quality and limit of groundwater withdrawal to check the saltwater intrusion. Major sources of groundwater contamination in the city are open discharge of domestic sewage, no sewerage system, open defication, septic tanks, soak pits, contaminated water pools and unorganized solid waste dumping. Groundwater samples were collected during post monsoon and summer form the water fields which provide the water supply to the city, open wells, open water bodies and hand pumps within the municipal boundary of the city. Groundwater samples were analyzed for 11 physico-chemicals, 2 bacteriological and iron concentration of every individual sample. The groundwater quality results were evaluated with drinking water standards as per of Bureau of Indian Standards and EPA standard to assess the suitability of the groundwater for domestic purposes. Finally, saltwater intrusion has also been simulated to know the extent and optimized safe withdrawal from the tube wells for the future water supply based on the field data and groundwater quality. Based on quality and simulation results, any development activities in the region needs to be carefully planned and accordingly measures are suggested to safeguard and conserve the groundwater resources.
