Gas Chromatographic Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Groundwater along Wastewater Irrigation Areas*
Wastewater has been extensively used for agricultural irrigation in arid and semi-arid areas in china. Poor control of both wastewater quality and long-term application resulted in the occurrence of pollutants accumulation and relevant deleterious effects, especially for persistent pollutants and permanently bound chemical residues. In the present study, twenty-three groundwater samples were collected for analyses; meanwhile a selective method for determining polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in groundwater using gas chromatography and flame ionization detector was described. Solid phase extraction (SPE) was applied for PAHs-extraction from groundwater samples. Mean concentrations, as the sum of 16 PAHs ranges of 3.67-25.70 μg/L in 23 groundwater samples. Concentration of Baa and Bkf reaches to 3.98 μg/L and 4.77 μg/L, respectively, which is higher than any other composition of PAHs. It can be concluded that high contents of PAHs have accumulated in the soils irrigated with wastewater, and the main origin of PAHs was from the wastewater discharged from petrochemical factory.
