Characterizing the Emissions of Polybrominated Dibenzo-p-diozins and Dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) from Metallurgical Processes
This study investigated the characteristics of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) in the stack flue gases of metallurgical facilities. The mean PBDD/F TEQ (7 congeners) concentrations in the stack flue gases of the electric arc furnaces (EAFs), fly ash treatment plant and sinter plants were 5.23, 0.950 and 1.90 pg TEQ/Nm3, respectively. PBDD/F concentrations in the stack flue gases of the metallurgical facilities were 2–3 orders higher than those in the different atmospheric environments. The fly ash treatment plant exhibited highest PCDD/F and PBDD/F emission factors (7.97 μg I-TEQ/tonne-product and 59.3 ng TEQ/tonne-product), while sinter plants had lowest ones (1.81 μg I-TEQ/tonne-product, 4.42 ng TEQ/tonne-product and 79.0 μg/tonne-product). The characteristics of feeding materials seem to be the important factor affecting the level of PCDD/F and PBDD/F emission factors. The elevated emission factors of the fly ash treatment plant could be attributed to their higher PCDD/F and PBDD/F contents in the EAF fly ashes than those in the feeding scrap of EAFs or those in the feeding materials (iron ore, coke, flux, plant reverts) of sinter plants.
