Aspects Influencing Fitness Centers Environment
Fitness centers have become a recreation place for people, many of them has been constructed with no taking into account environmental and hygienic aspects, resulting in a risk on exercisers. This study aims to investigate environmental quality of three different kinds of fitness centers comprising airconditioner- equipped, no-air-conditioning and open-air. A set of environmental parameters, both physical and microbiological, that significantly indicate quality of indoor environment were measured. A study on exerciser’s attitudes towards indoor environment of the fitness centers was also carried out. Statistical indices were used to analyze differences as well as correlations among those parameters. The results indicate that PM10, noise level, temperature and humidity are statistically different in each fitness center. The quantities of both bacteria and fungi are also statistically significant in difference to fitness centers. PM10 and noise level are statistically correlated to a number of exercisers. Quantities of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) both airborne and on surface of exercise equipments correlate to a quantity of exercisers and parameters, i.e., wind velocity, temperature and humidity. For the study of exerciser’s attitudes, it results that environmental condition of air-conditioner-equipped fitness center is at high effect on exercisers, while no-air-conditioning and open-air fitness centers are at medium effects. The study outcomes concrete information for improving fitness center’s indoor environment and hygiene by considering exerciser’s attitudes. The result can be further used to set up fitness center’s environment guideline.
