Synthesis and Properties of Starch Grafted Poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) Copolymers

The starch grafted poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) copolymers including these modified with montmorillonite have been prepared and tested as flocculants. The modified starch-based polymers were synthesized using Fenton’s reagent as a redox radical initiator. An influence of synthesis parameters, such as: total water content, starch to acrylamide (AAm) molar ratio, AAm to acrylic acid (AA) molar ratio and nanofiller (MMT) content on physicochemical features as well as flocculation effectiveness were investigated.Starch grafted poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) copolymers were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and of rheometry. The rheometric measurements of starch grafted copolymers demonstrated significant changes depending on the nature an amount of monomers used (AA- anionogenic; AAm –neutral) and their ratio in the reaction products. The flocculation performance of synthesized copolymers was tested by treatment of aqueous model suspension of talc. The jar tests were included for measurements of the sludge volume and suspension extinction after settling of suspension. The experimental results show flocculation ability of the tested starch-g-acrylamide copolymers for talc aqueous suspensions.
