Influence of Sulphate(VI) and Nitrate(V) Ions on the Quality of Struvite Crystals in a Continuous Reaction Crystallization Process for Removing Phosphates from Diluted Water Solutions

The research results concerning phosphate ions removal from the diluted water solutions (1.0 mass % of PO4 3–) by means of magnesium and ammonium ions addition in stoichiometric proportions in the presence of sulphate (VI) or nitrate (V) ions in a continuous DT MSMPR crystallizer are presented and discussed. Process of phosphate ions precipitation followed by mass crystallization of struvite was carried out from the solutions containing 0.05 –1.0 mass % SO4 2–or 0.0443 –0.886 mass % NO3 –. Influence of concentration of the investigated ions on the crystal size distribution of struvite, its habit, as well as on the chemical composition of mother liquor and solid product was determined experimentally. It was experimentally proved that both sulphate (VI) and nitrate (V) ions affect product crystal size disadvantageously. With the increase in foreign ions concentration median size decreases, L50: 23.5 → 18.2 μm and 24.0 → 16.4 μm, respectively. The foreign ions affect also the homogeneity of struvite population (mean value of CV is ca. 91%).
