Evaluation of Dispersion Pattern of Wastewater through Marine Outfall

Many coastal cities release the liquid waste into marine water bodies through point and non-point discharges. Marine outfalls with multiport diffusers are one of the modern systems adopted for mega cities along the coast to dispose of large volume of domestic wastewaters. Once the marine outfall is operational, it is cumbersome to find it’s functional and operational behavior and the extent of dilution achieved due to many reasons like, variation in direction and buoyancy of upward flow, density, currents, tidal effects and also the submergence of the physical components of the diffuser. Hydrodynamic simulation through mathematical models and experimental application of tracers are the commonly adopted techniques for evaluation of mixing behavior, dilution and dispersion pattern of waste plume released through marine outfalls. A tracer investigation is a valuable tool to obtain factual information for the dispersion of wastewater. Two types of tracers are used in such studies viz. radiotracers with short half-life so that they decay rapidly and the impact on environmental components is insignificant and low doses of fluorescent dye tracers. Such experiments help to decide the monitoring and operational procedures for the diffuser system. However, there is limitation to generate replicate experimental data for a complex system of ocean with fluctuating conditions. Simulation through mathematical models also provides expected dilution and dispersion pattern of the waste plume. In the present paper application of mathematical model and use of fluorescent dye have been investigated to find out travel path and concentration distribution of dye in longitudinal and transverse direction.
