Water Quality Variation and Algae Succession in Integrated Fish Culture Ponds

Investigation on water quality variation and algae succession in integrated fish culture ponds in Bang- Pain district, Phranakorn-Sri Ayutthaya province, This aimed to investigate water quality variation and algae succession from integrated fish culture ponds. The culture was raised for about 8 months and then harvested. Algae from the samples were identified to fall into 94 species under 7 divisions. The species belong to Chlorophyta (35), Cyanophyta (25), Bacillariophyta (9), Euglenophyta (18),Chrysophyta (2), Pyrrhophyta (2), and Cryptophyta (3).Water quality (physico-chemical parameters) in integrated fish culture ponds changed dramatically over the culture period. It also changed when water was exchanged and lime applied. Bacillariophyta, particularly Cyclotella, dominated as culture period progressed. Other types of algae also changed and some of the possible causes of these fluctuations include changes in temperature, pH, carbon dioxide, light intensity, nutrient concentration, disease and the release of algae toxins by other organisms including competing plankton.
