Start-up and Optimisation of the DEAMOX Process after a Long Storage of Sludge

DEAMOX (DEnitrifying AMmonium OXidation) is a recently proposed biological nitrogen removal process for treatment of strong nitrogenous wastewater containing ammonia and nitrate. It combines the ANAMMOX reaction with denitratation (conversion of nitrate into nitrite). The start-up of the DEAMOX process and the reactivation of the corresponding sludge after long storage (5-16 months) were studied. Two different donors –inorganic (sulphide) and organic (acetate) were applied for denitratation. The DEAMOX process was further optimized with regard to pH, bicarbonate concentration and temperature.
