Assessment of Heavy Metals Pollution in Sediments of Foshan Waterway with Geoaccumulation Indez

Samples of sediment were collected at 14 stations along a typical municipal polluted river in the Pearl River Delta. Concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, Hg and As were analyzed to assess the ecological risk in the polluted river with Geoaccumulation Index. The comparison results with those background values and other municipal rivers reveal that the concentration of heavy metals in Foshan Waterway sediments is in a high level. The assessment results of Geoaccumulation Index show that the degree of heavy metal pollution is serious in most of the Foshan Waterway, and the situation is the worst at the stations of S5 and S5-1 located in the middle reaches of the Waterway. Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, Hg pollution in sediments is serious, and the degree is Hg>Cu>Zn>Cr.
