Effect of Permanganate Preozidation on Enhancing Biofilter for Organics Removal

For the advantages of short-term investment, high treatment efficiency and easy operation, a novel combined process of permanganate preoxidation and biofilter was used to remove various pollutants from drinking water. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of permanganate preoxidation on enhancing biofilter for the organics removal. A comparative pilot experiment about biofilter with and without permanganate preoxidation was conducted and the results showed that the performance of biofilter for organics removal was effectively improved by permanganate preoxidation. Compared with sole biofilter, the removal rate of CODMn, ammonia and nitrite in biofilter with permanganate pretreatment increased 5.4%, 10.9% and 13.0% respectively, which effectively improved drinking water quality. The bioactivity in both biofilters was also conducted according to SOUR method. The result showed that higher bioactivity in biofilter with permanganate preoxidation was determined, which could well explain the reason for permanganate preoxidation enhancing organics removal in biofiter.
