Annual Distribution Variation of Sediment and Its Driving Factors in the Mainstream of Red River
Annual distribution characteristics of river sediment concentration are closely relative to climate change and human activities and directly affected by the process of hydraulic resources development in the basin. Based on the monthly sediment concentration, precipitation and discharge data from 1959 to 2000 at the Manhao hydrological station on the Red River, the annual uneven distributions coefficient, the concentrated degree and time, the range of variation were used to analyze the annual distribution of sediment in four study periods, then discussing the impacts of climate changes and human activities on the variation of annual distribution of sediment concentration in the river. The results showed that the annual distribution of sediment concentration were highly variable in different study periods. The contributing ratio of climate changes to the quantity variation of annual distributions of sediment concentration in 1959–1969, 1970–1979, 1980–1989, 1990–2000 were 64%, 63%, 56%, 51% respectively, while the contributing ratio of human activities were 36%, 37%, 44%, 49% correspondingly.
