Ozidation of Tetracycline by Potassium Ferrate (VI) under UV Irradiation

Potassium ferrate (VI) was used for tetracycline (TC) decolorization and the effect of potassium ferrate (VI) and TC concentration, ultraviolet irradiation and initial pH conditions were investigated. It was found that there was an optimal concentration of potassium ferrate (VI) and TC for decolorization. The use of UV irradiation obviously improved the decolorization efficiency of potassium ferrate (VI), in which UV 254 nm irradiation demonstrated a more powerful effect than that of UV 365 nm. The combination of Potassium ferrate (VI) and UV irradiation was proved to be more effective for TC degradation. Potassium ferrate (VI) maintained a comparatively stable decolorization efficiency under acidic and neutral pH conditions. The disappearance of the typical UV-Vis absorbance peaks of TC indicates an oxidation and decolorization process occurred during potassium ferrate (VI) oxidation.
