Microwave-Assisted Preparation of TiO2/Activated Carbon

Tetrabutyltitanate (TNB) and granular activated carbon (AC) were used to prepare TiO2/AC composite photocatalyst by microwave irradiation. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was used as target pollutant to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of TiO2/AC. Influence of dosage of tetrabutyltitanate, ethanol, acetic acid and water, microwave power, microwave irradiation time and calcination temperature on photocatalytic activity of TiO2/AC catalyst prepared was investigated. The optimal conditions of preparation of TiO2/AC catalyst were determined. The catalyst was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the optimal conditions for preparation of TiO2/AC are as follows: the dosage of tetrabutyltitanate, ethanol, acetic acid, water and activated carbon is 3mL, 24 mL, 0.8 mL and 0.6 mL and 2 g, respectively, microwave power is 500W, microwave irradiation time is 1 min, calcination temperature is 500 , and calcination time is 2 h. ℃ The particles of TiO2 deposited on the surface of activated carbon were small and uniform, and existed as anatase not rutile. Photocatalytic degradation of HCB could be successfully accomplished by TiO2/AC catalyst. The degradation efficiency of HCB of 200 μg/L reaches up to 95.2%.
