Diversity of Surface Aquatic Bacteria from Dongting Lake, China

Three samples of surface water collected from Dongting Lake (Yueyang City, Hunan Province, China) were studied. In addition to physico-chemical analyses, the bacterial diversity and community structure of these samples were described at genetic levels by amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA). A total of 105 different ARDRA patterns were obtained from 241 clones, and were studied as operational taxonomic units (OTUs). 14 dominant clones were selected for sequencing. The sequence data and phylogenetic analysis showed that there was great bacterial diversity among the three water samples. The 14 dominant sequences fell into four putative main phylogenetic divisions, α-Proteobacteria, β-Proteobacteria, γ-Proteobacteria, and Flavobacterium. In addition, environmental parameters of hydrological and nutrient conditions were also studied to evaluate their effects of aquatic bacterial community structures.
