Leaching Ezperiments on Cd Releasing from Some Factory-bearing Soils of Changsha-Zhuzhou, Hunan, China

The experiments of simulative acid rain leaching soils samples from Zhuzhou Smeltery and Changsha Chromate Factory (Hunan) revealed high concentrations of Cd in the soil as well as in adjacent soils. In these investigations, experimental leaching of Cd-containing soils was performed in the laboratory. The three types of acid rain solutions which were used in the leach experiments to waters of pH 3.5, pH 4.5, and pH 5.6. The results show that acid rain accelerates the releasing of Cd from the soils, the average leaching Cd concentrations at pH 3.5 and pH 4.5 were about 1.80-2.98 times more than that of pH 5.6, which had remarkable correlativity with Cd concentration and binding forms in soil samples. The correlation coefficient is 0.94 between Cd and Zn, 0.82 between Cd and Cr, -0.35 between Cd and Pb in the runoff leachate of sample S1; while in S2 sample, the correlation coefficient is 0.59 between Cd and Cr, 0.68 between Cd and Pb. The origin of Cd had good relationship for factory production. Assay of the leach solutions, Cd concentration was higher than that of the state standard content of Ⅴ surface water (GB 3838-2002), especially in S1, the Cd concentration leaching from pH 3.5 and pH4.5 was 1037 and 768 times higher than that of the State Standard content. With time of the acid rain leaching, Cd could be released more quickly from the factory-bearing soils. In the absence of an effective remediation program, Cd release will be an environmental problem.
