Effect of Key Soil Properties on Dinoseb Adsorption to Soils

Herbicide dinoseb (2-sec-butyl-4, 6-dinitrophenol) was found in the groundwater of Rhone river basin in Switzerland. Sorption is one of the major mechanisms that influence the fate of herbicide in soil. In this study, several batch sorption experiments have been carried out with dinoseb and with various soil samples. The batch-determined parameters were analyzed statistically, and the relationships between the adsorption parameters and some soil properties were investigated. It has been found sorption parameter values of dinoseb showed significant spatial variations and they were normally distributed in the the field. With path coefficient analysis, the Freundlich sorption coefficients, Kf, of dinoseb were found to be directly affected by soil organic carbon contents (OC) and soil clay contents. Other soil properties exerted indirect influence on Kf through OC. The heterogeneity of OC and clay contents accounted for 97% of Kf variability of dinoseb.
