KMnO4 Ozidation of DNAPLPCE in Saturated Porous Media
One of the most successful techniques for the remediation of dense non aqueous phase liquids (DNAPL) in saturated soils is the in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO). Among the different solvents forming DNAPL, perchloroethylene (PCE) is a stable, dense, hazardous contaminant, with a low water solubility. Field applications of PCEDNAPL oxidation with KMnO4 solutions is performed in difficult conditions. The aim of this paper is to analyze the PCEDNAPL degradation process in a model porous medium. For this, a laboratory-scale column has been used under experimental conditions defined precisely. All the experimental protocols have been defined and their reproducibility tested by determination of the residence time distribution. Six experiments have been carried out at two levels of PCEDNAPL porous saturation. Three KMnO4 concentrations, in a broad range, were used. The process has been followed by the characterization of the outlet solution.
