Performance Comparison of Biofilm and Suspended Sludge Treatment Processes in Sequencing Batch Reactor

Taking porous multimolecular material HP-8-8 as carriers of biofilm attached-growing,performances of biofilm and conditional activated sludge systems were investigated and conpared in both sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with same geometrical configuration. Biofilm attached and fixed to the carriers in the biofilm SBR (BSBR) within 20 days after inoculation with suspended activated sludge from a conventional wastewater treatment plant. Adsorption of biofilm was observed in the BSBR. Mean COD removal in the BSBR and the SBR were 92% and 86% respectively. The BSBR processing system possessed better adaptability to different influent loading strength, superior shock loading tolerance and sludge sediment characteristic than the SBR processing; these superiorities are significant to improve processing efficiency in intermittent operation mode.
