Glutathione Fermentation by Saccharomyces Cerevisiae to Reclaim Scrap Rubber
The treatment of scrap rubber is a diffical problem in the fields of Environment Protection and Rubber Reclaiming. In this paper, a new desulfurizing agent for reclaiming rubber material was put forward. The new desulfurizer is glutathione which is a mercapto compound extracted from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae on glutathione production was carried out. Rubber desulfurization by glutathione has been tested and the influence of factors, such as the dosage of the desulfurizer, temperature, time, solvent, phase-transfer catalyst was investigated. The results shows that the maximum biomass concentration of 80.21 g/L was achieved and the glutathione yield reached to 856 mg/L. Glutathione played a remarkable role in the desulfurization of the ground NR (Natural Rubber) in the emulsion prepared with organic solvent and phase-transfer catalyst. The devulcanizated ground NR with good mechanical properties could be obtained under the conditions of amount of ground rubber 100 phr, cyclohexane 76 phr, phase-transfer catalyst 6 phr and yeast extractive- glutathione 0.5 –1.0 phr and at 40 for 2 h. The swelling ratio of the devulcanizated ground NR was significantly increased ℃. The uniformity and the mechanical properties of the moulded rubber stock were also increased. The crosslinking density of the ground NR was reduced by glutathione. The results from X-ray photoelectron spectrometry analysis demonstrated that the sulfur content on the surface of the ground NR was reduced significantly.
