Alternative Approach to Better Municipal Solid Waste Management in China
The paper explored a novel approach to treat MSW in mining cities, combined MSW management problems with status of mining cities with a characteristic of large-area mined areas and long-distance tunnels in mines. MSW was compacted into waste block, with 2-3 landfill gas and leachate discharge holes (5-100 mm) on every surface, whose volume and density were 0.03-0.5 m3, 0.8-1.5 t/m3, respectively. Mined-out areas equipped with leachate and gas collection system were filled with waste block. Hence, the method can not only save valuable cultivated land, but also solve the problem of mined-out areas filling, which is thought of as an effective MSW integrated management measure.
