Analysis of the Growth of Chinas Military Ezpenditure——from the Perspective of an Emerging Economic and Political Power
This paper analyzes Chinas military expenditure during 19972006 from the perspective of an emerging economic and political power.By comparing Chinas military expenditure within the fast growing developing economies Brazil,Russia,India and china (BRICs)and within the permanent members of Security Council of United Nations,we show that Chinas defense expenditure has remained at a fairly low level as an emerging big power. Furthermore,by comparing Chinas defense burden and gross domestic product(GDP)growth rate within BRICs and within the permanent members of Security Council,it is clear that the relatively fast growth of Chinas military expenditure is still appropriate with respect to its economy capacity. Finally, because China sacrificed its national defense for the rapid economic growth during the first 10-20 years of its Economic Reform,we also argue that it is reasonable and inevitable for China to modestly increase investments in national defense.
