Preliminary study on optimizing operation of Three Gorges Reservoir during flood season

Followed by power generation, navigation, water supply and ecological targets etc, flood control is the principal target of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGP). This study focuses on optimal operation of TGP during flood season and by using a flood-risk minimizing model and a power-generation maximizing model, this research has studied the conflicts between flood-control and power-generation of TGP during flood season. A step further, based on the operation rules of TGP, this study has tried two multi-objective operation models to analyze the integrated optimization of flood control and power generation operation of TGP. TGP has lost a large amount of electricity resources by the regular flood controlling rule. But, with optimization models, it could possibly enhance power generation of TGP with little trade-off on flood risk.
