Characteristics of the ezposed period length of Dongting Lake beach and the impact of Three-Gorge project
Dongting Lake, Chinas second-largest freshwater lake, is located in northeastern Hunan Province and has a beach area of about 2,275 km2 in dry season. The length of exposed period of the beach is important for the plant and animal communities and their populations on the beach. By using the newest data, this paper aims to analysis the characteristics of the exposed period length of Dongting Lake beach during recent decades and provide a prediction of Three-Gorge Project on exposed period length of Dongting Lake beach. The results show that: (1) Exposed days of different elevation are obviously different and especially when contrasting between low flow year (such as 1972) and high flow year (such as 1998). (2) Length of exposed period changes dramatically at low level beach and medium level beach, little change are found in high level beach. (3) The length of exposed period of medium-level beach is most likely decreased in May or June. (4) The length of exposed period of medium-level beach is most likely increased in October.
