Hydrology for sustaining planet earth and biodiversity: Indian ezperience
Hydrology plays significant role of sustaining planet earth, life, biodiversity and livelihood security. Interactive studies require analysis of phenomena, processes and their interaction throughout space and time. Therefore, hydrology has to be considered as multi-dimensional i.e. spatial (including terrestrial ecosystems and aquatic ecosystems), temporal and attributes (including water, human life and biodiversity etc.). The paper focuses on contents relating to contemporary issues, major drivers, biotic implications and conservation measures. There is need to orient our environmental policies to link with water, life and Planet Earth programme. Planet earth practices can be best understood by analyzing biophysical, socio-economic and cultural data in an integrated and interactive ways. Therefore, International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) initiative will become a key science for decision support of sustainable development and management of water resources, human and biotic life.
