Estimating recalcitrant organic carbon outflow from Ashikaga City, Japan

The present study estimated the unit of recalcitrant organic carbon outflow from Ashikaga City, Tochigi, Japan, based on the laboratory measurements of total organic carbons (TOC) and dissolved organic carbons (DOC) as well as the field measurements of the river discharges of the Watarase river into which most of the citys drainage water flows. The estimates of TOC and DOC were 4.6 g/s and 3.5 g/s, respectively. These results suggested that 46% of TOC outflow and 47% of DOC outflow from the city were recalcitrant fractions, which were much lower than those of Watarase river. The per-capita outflow units of recalcitrant fractions of TOC and DOC from the city were estimated to be about 2.5 g/d and 1.9 g/d.
