Modeling soil erosion and sediment transport at regional scale using fractal approach

A grid based regional scale soil erosion and sediment transport model was setup for four sub-catchments of Indus basin using coarser resolution spatial data. Model considers spatial variability of catchment as a regular square grid system with canopy interception, infiltration, depression storage, one-dimensional overland flow and sediment transport in the steepest descent direction. As the slope is the most important parameter for sediment modeling, therefore slope averaging effect was taken care by adopting the fractal analysis approach. Scaled slopes were computed for 250 m downscaling from 1 kmx 1 km grid resolution data by modifying the fractal dimension equation for the local topography of the catchments. The model has been calibrated for Phulra catchment of siran river and validated for three catchments of the indus Basin. Results show that simulated sediment loads match very well with the observed data.
