Wheat Identification based on MODIS product: a case study in Weishan Irrigation Area
The cropping information is of critical importance to many applications including irrigation management. Remote sensing technology is a promising way to identify and map the crop types at a large scale in a real-time manner. In this paper the multi-temporal data analysis approach is utilized to map wheat planting information based on MODIS NDVI product which can be freely downloaded from NASA website. The MODIS NDVI image acquired at a specific critical time is first classified into several categories, and then the temporal profile of NDVI value for each category is extracted from a series of MODIS NDVI images. The crop type can be determined from the temporal profile of NDVI curve by matching the crop phenological characteristics, and the planting area can be counted from the classification map obtained at the first step. Our method is applied to Weishan Irrigation Area, and the results show that the critical time for wheat identification is 113th day of the year (DOY), and the identification results are greatly influenced by the sample size and background value for temporal profile of NDVI values.
