Criteria and Indicators Approach in Sustainable Forest Management in India;a case of Tropical Sal Forests of Central India
India is one of the mega bio-diversity country. About 60 percent of the rural population is directly dependent on forest for livelihood.Forest of the country is about 68 million ha and is providing various goods and services to them besides timber and small wood. Thus sustainable management of the forest becomes an integral part of sustainable development of the country.Forest management should be sustainable so that continuous flow of these forest resources may be maintained to ensure sustainable liveli-hood to these forest dependent communities. In India some portion(about 1/3~(rd))of the forest has been brought under the joint forest management in which community play important role in forest management. The Management interventions made need to be monitored to ensure sustainable forest management.Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management has been recognised as one of the successful approach for monitoring sustainability of forests. Several countries are involved in developing international process at regional and national level as perthe different forestry situations. In India Bhopal-India Process an offshoot of International recognised regional initiative for Dry forest in Asia. Based on the national level C&I at Forest Management Unit level indicators have been identified and applied with the involvement of communities to assess the sustainability of the forest.East-Mandla Forest Division(FMU)is one of the tropical sal forest area in central India and has been successfully tested with Local Unit Criteria and Indicators Development(LUCID).In the FMU,31 site-specific indicators evolved based on the Bhopal-India process of SFM to serve as operational framework for monitoring and assessment of forest sustainability including the productivity and services. These indicators provided adequate information on social, economic and ecological aspects of forest, which are the pillars of sustainable development.Based on the data collected against the indicators,Sustainability Index (SI)was calculated with the help of FORMACS(Software developed for calculating sI),which indicated the direction of change and issues to be addressed to achieve the sustainability of the forests.
