COMPARISON BETWEEN SNMP AND CORBA AND THEIR APPLICATION

The performance of network management system becomes increasingly important as the size and complexity of the networks scale up. Nowadays, there are two common platforms used for network management: SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture). SNMP has some drawbacks especially when applied in big networks built on different hardware platforms; while CORBA, which is an object-oriented distributed computing environment, can provide the large-scale heterogeneous internet application system with a platform independent of hardware platform, programming language, computer operating system and network transmission protocol. This paper compares SNMP with CORBA, and then discusses the reasons why SNMP and CORBA are suitable for EMS (Element Management System) and NMS (Network Management System) respectively. A CORBA/SNMP integration network management system model is proposed, thus ensuring higher efficiency of the network management contrasting traditional network management implementation models.
