MESOMORPHOUS STRUCTURE OF POLYELECTROLYTE-AMPHIPHILE COMPLEXES VARYING WITH COMPOSITION AND BACKBONE BRANCHING

Introduction Polymer-amphiphile complexes are attracting substantial attention in recent years due to their facility in preparation and special functions. The self-assembled supramolecular structure can be constructed through specific non-covalent interactions and polyelectrolyte-amphiphile complex is a most important predominant member in this group. Both nanostructure and physicochemical property can be delicately adjusted by the nature of polymer and amphiphilic molecules. The many studies, however, were based on the complex of 1:1 stoichiometry for polyelectrolyte and surfactant with respect to the charge site, and little has known on the effect of complex composition on the packing structure in nonequimolar polyelectrolyte-amphiphile complexes. Another question is whether the backbone structure of polyelectrolytes induces mesomorphous structure change in the polyelectrolyte-amphiphile complex. Answering these questions requires polyelectrolytes having the same repeat unit but different backbones.
